Vice President of Development

ORGANIZATION:
Tufts Medical Center is a world-class, academic medical institution which is home to two full-service hospitals: one serving adults Tufts Medical Center, and Floating Hospital for Children, dedicated exclusively to all levels of pediatric care. The Medical Center is also the principal teaching hospital for Tufts University School of Medicine, and pioneers groundbreaking research including numerous clinical trials available exclusively at Tufts Medical Center. Tufts Medical Center was the first full-service hospital in Boston, founded in 1796 as the Boston Dispensary by a group of public-spirited Bostonians. Today, Tufts Medical Center is a leading academic medical center with an operating budget of $500 million. The Medical Center is licensed for 450 beds; employs 5,000 healthcare workers, researchers, and administrative staff; and, approximately 500 attending physicians are employees of an affiliated physician group. All full-time Tufts Medical Center physicians hold faculty appointments at Tufts University School of Medicine. Residency programs in virtually all medical specialties are available at Tufts Medical Center, and Tufts medical students learn the latest techniques and advances in health care under the direction of Tufts Medical Center staff physicians. Medical Center physicians also provide medical specialty services in 140 locations throughout eastern Massachusetts.

OPPORTUNITY:
Tufts Medical Center is seeking a seasoned fundraising professional to assume the position of Major Gifts Officer. Reporting to the Director of Major Gifts, and serving on the development team while under the general direction of the Vice President for Development, the Major Gifts Officer plans and implements a development program for assigned areas which will result in achieving fundraising goals and objectives from the systematic identification, qualification, cultivation and solicitation of individuals who have the capability of making gifts of $25,000 or more to the Tufts Medical Center. In collaboration with assigned physicians, volunteers, senior administration and Development staff, provides significant prospect management coordination and communication of development activities/assignments with the appropriate functional areas within Tufts Medical Center. The Major Gifts Officer may also be responsible for achieving fund raising objectives for other constituencies and projects as assigned. The ideal candidate will bring a history of successful leadership of thriving Development programs in a complex academic Medical Center.

CANDIDATE PROFILE:

Identifies new major gift prospects on an ongoing basis. Manages prospect comprehensive relationships with the Medical Center from discovery through cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. Uses Development office Raiser’s Edge protocols in recording all aspects of prospect cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. Works in partnership with development volunteers, physicians, development staff and senior medical center executives. Serves as the staff liaison to volunteer development committees as assigned Works to create areas of clinical areas of expertise in conjunction with medical and research department physicians and researchers. Drafts cases for support of fund raising initiatives as assigned. Acknowledges donor gifts as appropriate and as per the Development Office acknowledgement protocol. Maintains knowledge of current laws and tax code regulations pertaining to charitable outright and planned giving. Discusses with donors, and their advisors, the ways in which gifts can be planned and made with maximum benefit to the Medical Center and the donor. Attends various internal and external meetings as directed, for the purpose of maintaining a high visibility and physical presence at the Medical Center. Coordinates and does prospect recruitment and follow-up related cultivation and special events such as tours, meetings, house parties, for major donors and prospects. Maintains awareness of trends in the health care and fund raising industries which can have an impact on fundraising efforts. Attends event functions representing the Medical Center in which donors and prospects are present. Performs other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

1) Bachelor’s degree required; attainment of a graduate degree, CFRE or FAHP accreditation desirable
2) Seven to ten years' development experience including two or more years of major gift responsibilities including direct, personal solicitation experience.
3) Understanding of planned giving concepts and/or financial and estate planning.
4) Excellent oral and written communication skills.
5) Ability to work independently on several projects.
6) High attention to detail and attentive to deadlines.
7) High level of self-confidence, creativity, self-motivation and energy needed to undertake diverse responsibilities
8) Excellent references from previous employers and Board leaders
