Franklin Memorial Hospital, Farmington, Maine
A 70-bed community hospital in rural northern Maine, Franklin sought Copley Harris Company's help in planning and conducting a capital campaign in 2001 to raise $2.15 million toward a $13.3 million expansion and renovation project–the hospital's first major construction since 1975. CHC created a campaign plan and strategy, helped recruit and train a diverse and committed team of campaign volunteers, and served as advisor to the hospital's tenacious and brilliant development director, president, and campaign chair. A Kresge Foundation grant helped fuel the community phase and propel the campaign to success.

Jewish Community Housing for the Elderly, Brighton, Massachusetts
To keep pace with the explosive need for affordable housing for Boston's elderly, JCHE launched a campaign to raise $5.5 million in capital funds to support construction of two 150-unit buildings and establish a $2 million operating endowment in support of vital programs. The organization retained CHC to conduct a precampaign study and provide counsel to support staff and volunteer leaders. The campaign, still underway, is on target to achieve its goal.

Maine Initiatives, Augusta, Maine
Its motto, "Water to the roots, and plenty of it," captures the essence of this vibrant organization, which seeks to cultivate social, economic, and environmental justice by providing grants and other support to local grassroots organizations. Executive director Deborah Felder and the board of trustees hired CHC to conduct a feasibility study and assist with precampaign planning assistance; currently, we are helping the organization execute its first campaign, aiming to raise $2 million to enhance the group's endowment and program funds.

Nantucket Cottage Hospital, Nantucket, Massachusetts
The smallest of Massachusetts' 60 acute-care facilities, Nantucket Cottage is among the nation's most unusual hospitals. Located on Nantucket Island, 30 miles at sea, it serves a year-round population of 8,000 (swelling to 40,000 in spring and summer) as well as tens of thousands of weekend and other short-term visitors. CHC conducted a campaign planning study and worked closely with campaign leaders and staff to reach a challenging $20 million endowment goal.

St. John's Preparatory School, Danvers, Massachusetts
Founded in 1907 by the Xaverian Brothers, St. John's Prep is an all-male college preparatory school providing exceptional academics, athletics, and extracurricular experiences for students from communities throughout the North Shore area. Copley Harris Company began working with school leaders in 1999 to develop capacity-building strategies aimed at strengthening all aspects of institutional advancement. In addition to the creation of a planned giving program, our campaign planning study and counsel contributed to the success of the Next Challenge Campaign, which raised $12 million for the new A. E. Studzinski Library (opened in September 2003) and extensive renovations to Benjamin Hall. Under the direction of headmaster Skip Shannon and advancement director Michael Newhall, the Prep received a $5 million gift, believed to be one of the largest nonestate gifts ever received by a New England Catholic school. Currently, the campaign is working toward a $25 million goal with the intent of building the school's endowment to $10 million and undertaking further physical-plant improvements.

Stephens Memorial Hospital, Norway, Maine
Holding the record for the swiftest, most efficient, most dynamic campaign in CHC's history, the Stephens Memorial Campaign illustrates the power of great leadership. Chaired by the community's most revered physician, Dr. William Medd, the campaign raised $9 million in less than one year to expand imaging and emergency services and build a new operating suite. CHC conducted the campaign study and provided nonresident counsel during 2002.
